The Accountability Mirror Challenge | Confidence Month Week 4

“It requires tons of repetition with focus. High achievement doesn't require inborn talent. It requires working your ass off.” ~ David Googins

Hey Reader!

In this last email of Confidence Month, I’m going to talk about probably the most uncomfortable tool in the whole series: the Accountability Mirror.

It comes from David Goggins. If you don’t know him, he was overweight, miserable, and going nowhere. One day, he got fed up and decided he was done making excuses. Two years later, he became a Navy SEAL, then went on to complete 50 ultramarathons. He also holds the record for completing 4,025 pull-ups in 17 hours. And more!

Ok. He’s a little over the top. But what I like about him is he doesn’t talk about confidence like it’s something you’re born with. He talks about it like it’s something you earn. And work on every day.

One of the tools he used was the “Accountability Mirror.” He’d put sticky notes on a mirror with his goals and the small steps he had to take to get there. Each day, he couldn’t ignore what he was supposed to be doing. Then, at night, he’d look in the mirror and tell himself the brutal truth about who he was and what he actually did that day. No excuses.

And yeah, it’s weird. Talking to yourself is one thing. Talking to yourself while staring at yourself is another.

So, how does this relate to your game?

I think a lot of “confidence problems” are actually “preparation problems.” You can’t expect to feel confident if you haven’t set real goals, been honest about what you need to fix, and then actually done the work.

Try this. After a game, ask yourself hard questions like these:

Did you miss those wide-open threes because you “aren't confident” or because you haven’t practiced enough shots?

Did you miss that free throw because you are “in your head” or because you haven’t worked on free throws in weeks?

Did you get cooked by your man because the other guy is “just faster” or because you haven’t studied top defenders?

  • If it’s a skill problem, you can fix it.
  • If it’s a habits problem, you can fix it.
  • If it’s an honesty problem, you can fix it.

Confidence is built by proof. And reps.

So, this holiday break, grab some sticky notes and a marker and get really honest with the person in the mirror.

3 Hacks From Me

Hack 1: One-Minute Mirror Check

After a bad game or a bad practice, look at yourself in the mirror for 60 seconds with no phone, no excuses. Ask questions you would ask a friend who just had a rough game or practice: “What’s the real reason that happened and what could I have done better?” Then say your answers out loud or write them down. That's your first step to fixing it.

Hack 2: The "After-Game" Voice Memo

Right after your next game, record a 30 to 60-second voice memo to yourself. Don't complain about the coach or refs. Say exactly what you did poorly and what you did well. Listening to it the next day or before your next game will let you hear the truth without the game-night emotions.

Hack 3: Sticky-Notes Goals

Pick a mirror you look at every day and stick up Post-its with your goals and the steps to reach them. Don’t just write "Get better at shooting." Write exactly what you need to do today: "Make 100 threes." Every night, check the mirror. If you did the work, move the note to the side to stack up your wins. If you didn't, leave it so you have to stare at it and admit you didn't do what you said you would.

2 Questions for Growth

  1. When you look at the mirror tonight, did you actually do the steps you wrote on the sticky notes today?
  2. If you keep doing what’s on those notes every day for a month, how are you going to feel, and if you don’t do it, how are you going to feel?

“I want to practice to the point where it’s almost uncomfortable how fast you shoot, so that in the game things kind of slow down.” – Stephen Curry Hey Reader! Parent: “How was practice today?” You: “Great.” Was it really? Your parents weren’t there, so they take your word for it. If you say “great” every time they ask, they'll assume you should be starting, getting more minutes, playing varsity, averaging 20. But should you… based on how you actually practice? Here’s a simple test. If a...

“Why would I think about missing a shot that I haven’t taken yet?” ~ Michael Jordan. Hey Reader! About 2 weeks ago, I played my last pro game with HLA Lucentum in Alicante, Spain. Not because the season is over. Not because I'm injured. I got cut. There is a lot I could say about this. How getting cut as an overseas pro basketball player works, why I think the situation played out the way it did, what I'm going to do next. But what's really interesting is that for the first time in my career,...

Aubrey Galvan, Vanderbilt guard

“I know my shot will fall. It’s just confidence, honestly. You can’t get down on yourself. You can’t focus on the negative. If you’re in your head, from experience, it never works out.” ~Aubrey Galvan, 5'6" Vanderbilt Point Guard Hey Reader! My mom sent me a text the other day: “Unbothered. Good subject for the next newsletter.” She was talking about Vanderbilt’s freshman point guard Aubrey Galvan. She’s 5'6" and playing point guard for the No. 5 ranked team in the country, which is insane....
